Becoming an Official

Have you ever thought about becoming a football official?а Do you have a bunch of questions?а Here are some facts about officiating with the New Haven Football Officials Association (NHFOA).

The NHFOA services all levels of youth, middle school and high school football in the greater New Haven area. We service the Shoreline Youth Football Conference, most schools in the Southern Connecticut Conference, some schools in the Pequot Conference, among others in the area.

The New Haven Football Officials Association strives to produce some of the best officials in the state.а Every new official participates in on-field and classroom sessions to learn the rules and mechanics needed to effectively and safely officiate football games at all levels. Upon certification by our educational leaders, new officials will be assigned to games with more senior officials to help introduce them to Уlive gameФ officiating.

Once certified, new officials will be responsible for purchasing their own uniforms which include:

  • Polished, black, athletic shoes. Preferably cleated.
  • Striped socks.
  • White knickers and a black belt.
  • Collared striped shirt, both short and long sleeves.
  • A fitted black hat with white piping.
  • Officiating tools: flags, down indicator, bean bag, information cards, pencil, whistle, lanyard, chain clip, sports watch with timer, signal card, ball pressure tester.
  • Estimated cost: $225. Veteran officials sometimes have hand-me-downs that help new officials get started

In addition, to rules and mechanics, officials must be in excellent physical condition.а LetТs face it, kids are fast these days, and they get faster as they get older and we are expected to keep up with them for an entire game.
