Playoff Selection Process

2006 PLAYOFF SELECTION PROCESS

NHFOA

The following is a brief description on the process used to select officials for State Playoff games. The selection of officials is the sole responsibility of the Commissioner, Director of Officiating and the Better Officiating Committee.

а

The process is as follows:

  1. All officials begin the year with a rating from the previous year.

  2. These ratings were based on observations (either in person or by tape) and how they rated among other officials at their position.а Any official that is observed had been given an oral critique at the earliest convenience of the observer. In most cases this was done following the game. However, if the observe had more than one game to observe in a given day , the critique normallyа took place at the next meetingа or was sentа via e-mail to the officials observed.
  3. As the new season begins, observers were instructed to look to see if any appreciable improvement was being made in the area which was addressed. If not the critique focused on those areas. In many cases films were also giving to the crew with play by play evaluations. Once again the film critique looks at strengths and areas that need improvement. All evaluations (game and film) are then compiled from all observers. The Commissioner and Director of officiating then meet and the highest rated officials for the current season are then selected for the playoffs. If an official worked the previous 2 years the next highest official at the position is selected.

Other criteria that are included in the process are:

а

  • Physical appearance, bearing , hustle and condition
  • Rules knowledge, understanding, application.

  • Poise, handling players, coaches & fellow officials.
